Job Summary
This Counsellor position works in our counsellor program. This counsellor focuses on supporting and counselling survivors to develop new approaches to overcome challenges and situations survivors are currently navigating. They will help survivors to learn about the effects of trauma, to build coping skills and to assist survivors in identifying strengths for caring for themselves. This counsellor will aide survivors in developing a deeper awareness and understanding of their self. This program is aimed at delivering counselling that could fall within psychotherapy and thus does require membership in on of the governing colleges regulating the act of psychotherapy (including, but not limited to, College of Registered Psychotherapists, College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers, and the Colleges of Psychologists, Nurses, and Occupational Therapists). REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of a Social Work/Social Service Worker program is required, as well as five years’ experience in the field.
• A University Degree in Social Services or a related field is preferred.
• Knowledge of Health & Safety, Policies & Procedures would be beneficial.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with a cross section of constituents throughout Sarnia Lambton
• membership in one of the governing colleges regulating the act of psychotherapy (including, but not limited to, College of Registered Psychotherapists, College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers, College of Psychologists, and College of Nurses)
REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as demonstrated problem solving, planning and conflict resolution skills.
• 3+ years of experience working in the area of sexualized violence, human trafficking, domestic violence or related field
• 1-3 years of one-on one counselling experience as well as strong crisis management skills
• In depth knowledge and understanding of the issues prevalent for survivors of sexual violence, human trafficking and gender-base violence
• Understanding of feminist perspectives and violence against women as well as a thorough understanding of trauma
• Group facilitation skills and experience
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• Computer literate
• A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are both considered an asset
• Successful completion of vulnerable sector CPIC is a requirement.
